Integrative Cancer Care

What is Integrative Cancer Therapy?

Integrative Cancer Therapy focuses on a new and growing movement in cancer treatment. Integrative care includes therapeutic interventions in diet, lifestyle, exercise, stress care, and nutritional supplements, as well as other advanced treatments based on the results of your Onconomics tests that look at targeted therapies to your particular cancer cells.

Integrative care has two layers. First, conventional treatments attack the disease itself. At the same time, evidence-informed therapies help combat cancer-related side effects. The two together, conventional cancer treatments and supportive therapies, delivered simultaneously - that's integrative cancer care.

As part of our integrative cancer care we offer Onconomics testing, which looks at Circulating Tumor Cells (CTC) quantity and immunophenotyping, this means that we can determine the following characteristics of your specific cancer:

  • Whether it is sensitive or resistant to Radiotherapy or Hyperthermia
  • Chemosensitivity/Chemoresistance of cytotoxic drugs, the drugs that your oncologist will use if you choose to do chemotherapy or immunotherapy.
  • Targeted therapies
  • How aggressive the cancer is, ie what is the risk for invasion and spread (metastases)
  • Is it sensitive to hormone treatment (for breast and other hormone sensitive tumours)
  • and natural substances and plant extracts

This is an empowering way of taking control of a disease that fills most people with fear and uncertainty, giving you back some control in choosing your treatment options based on your individual type of cancer. This is applicable to people who have had cancer in the past, or who currently have active cancer, irrespective of the stage and degree.

“Integrative oncology is a patient-centred, evidence-informed field of cancer care that utilizes mind and body practices, natural products, and/or lifestyle modifications from different traditions alongside conventional cancer treatments. Integrative oncology aims to optimize health, quality of life, and clinical outcomes across the cancer care continuum and to empower people to prevent cancer and become active participants before, during, and beyond cancer treatment.”

What are the benefits of integrative care?

The goal of integrative cancer care is to help patients better tolerate treatment-related side effects in order to reduce treatment delays or interruptions and get the most out of life. Living with cancer and the side effects of its treatment is often associated with symptoms that can impact how you feel. Irrespective of the stage of disease, a Supportive and Integrative Cancer Care Specialist can assist in improving one’s quality of life and sense of wellbeing.

This includes addressing symptoms including pain, fatigue, weight change, de-conditioning, nausea, loss of appetite, symptoms related to chemotherapy, surgery, or radiotherapy, as well as psychosocial, emotional, and spiritual concerns.

Part of this process is recognising and assessing the potential benefits of integrative therapies available that can assist you on your journey to recovery.
